PREVENTATIVE COUNSELLING
What is it?
Think about applying sunscreen before a day at the beach. In order to prevent getting sunburned or exposed to damaging UV rays, we slather on sunscreen before basking in the sun.
OR…
Think about washing your hands with soap and water after touching a grocery cart or gas pump. We do this not only to get rid of germs, but to also prevent ourselves from getting sick or spreading germs to others.
Both actions are used to prevent a negative outcome from happening in the future.
This can be applied to counselling as well.
Many turn to counselling after something disruptive occurs in their life. Although counselling is an important form of support and self-care, wouldn’t it be great to already have tools on hand to better manage these disruptions?
Preventative counseling is therapy that is focused on addressing potential psychological or emotional issues before they become serious problems. It aims to build resilience, enhance coping strategies, and equip individuals with tools to manage stress, prevent mental health issues, and promote overall well-being.
The goals of preventative counselling include:
1. Early Intervention: Addressing concerns such as anxiety, stress, or relationship difficulties early, before they escalate into more severe problems like depression or chronic stress.
2. Skill Building: Teaching techniques for stress management, conflict resolution, effective communication, and emotional regulation to help individuals handle future challenges.
3. Awareness and Education: Helping individuals recognize early signs of mental or emotional distress, which can help them seek help or apply coping strategies sooner.
4. Support during life transitions: Assisting with periods of significant change or stress, like moving, career changes, marriage, or parenthood, which can help prevent more serious mental health issues from developing.
Preventative counselling exists for individuals, couples, parents, groups and more.
